Bonjour

In the Connect to Server dialog box, and elsewhere in OS X, you can connect to another Mac, server, or printer by typing its IP address, which identifies it uniquely on the network (192.168.1.68, for example).

Fortunately, Bonjour spares you from having to memorize or write down IP addresses. Bonjour is an underlying OS X networking technology that lets networked devices detect each other on the network automatically and recognize each other’s capabilities. With Bonjour, each device announces its own presence on the network. (Without Bonjour, you must specifically connect to each piece of equipment on the network by address or name.)
